The British Commission for Maritime History

BCMH Boydell & Brewer Doctoral Prize

The British Commission is delighted to announce the establishment of a new Doctoral prize. The annual Boydell & Brewer Prize for the best doctoral dissertation in maritime history will begin in 2011.

Subjects eligible for consideration reflect the Commission's view of maritime history as a wide-ranging discipline.

Eligible candidates can be nominated by the dissertation supervisor. All doctorates must have been awarded by a UK university during the academic year preceding the prize. (For example, to be eligible for the 2011 prize, the PhD must have been awarded in the academic year 2010-11).

The prize winner will receive a cheque for £200, which will be presented at the Annual New Researchers in Maritime History Conference in March. S/he will also be invited to present a paper based on the winning thesis at this event. The prize winner’s thesis will be considered for publication in a revised form by Boydell & Brewer, with Boydell & Brewer allowed first right of refusal to publish.

Nominations should include in the first instance the following:

  • The name of the nominee, the title of the thesis and the awarding university;
  • The Abstract of the thesis;
  • A covering letter from the supervisor of no more than 500 words stating why the thesis is so outstanding that it should be considered for a prize;
  • Contact details of the supervisor.

If the Prize Committee deems that the dissertation merits serious consideration, a copy of the thesis will be requested. Please note that we will be unable to return this. Nominations should be sent electronically to the Honorable Secretary.
