Women in the Maritime Business World - An Online Workshop

Event date: * NEW DATE 29 Janaury 2027*

Location: Online

Organisers: BCMH

The British Commission for Maritime History (BCMH) is delighted by the response to the call for papers and the great range of papers submitted - it is truly international!

Please note that we have had to postpone the date of the conference from November 2026 to 29 January 2027. The event will take place in several sessions to accommodate for different time zones.

This online conference builds on the success of Lloyd's Register Foundation's project Re-writing Women into Maritime History.

While there were many historical restrictions on women working at sea, a growing body of research is demonstrating that the picture was different onshore.

The conference will cover themes relating to the maritime industry in its widest sense: women as business leaders, women as financial players, women running ‘masculine’ businesses, communities of business women and evidence of matrilineality. Those who failed in their business endeavours are just as much of interest as those who succeeded. What were the male and societal reactions? Who were the mentors, supporters or detractors? What about women employing men?

Registration not yet live. Further details and a link will be shared in December. Registration will be via Eventbrite.

Anyone interested in attending the conference without presenting a paper is also warmly invited to register an interest and further information will be sent to you in due course.

For any queries please contact info@maritimehistory.org.uk

Please also circulate this Conference and the new date among your networks.
