Call for papers - Beyond the Battlefield Conference

Event date: 2-3 September 2026

Location: University of Exeter

Organisers: Early Modern Conflict, War and Violence Network

Building on the success of last year’s inaugural conference, the Early Modern Conflict, War and Violence Network is delighted to announce its return in 2026 with a new theme: “Beyond the Battlefield.”

Studies of violence, conflict, and warfare, and the conferences that accompany them, tend to be heavily dominated by scholars of modern and contemporary military history. The aim of the network is to address that imbalance by creating a dedicated space for early modernists researching violence from all disciplines, and not solely military historians. They strongly encourage submissions from postgraduate researchers and early career scholars, and anticipate selecting key papers for development towards publication.

The conference will take place at the University of Exeter on 2–3 September 2026.

Find out more by emailing earlymodernwar@gmail.com with your abstracts or any questions.

The deadline for submissions is Friday 22 May.
