Call for Papers - Maritime Britain 1550 - 1750

Event date: 16-17 September 2025

Location: University of Southampton

Organiser: maritimebritain.org project team

This call for papers is linked with the launch of the AHRC-funded Maritime Britain Project’s website and searchable database (www.maritimebritain.org).

A two-day conference showcasing the latest research in maritime history and featuring three keynote lectures by Dr Richard Blakemore (Reading), Dr Elaine Murphy (Plymouth), and Professor Claire Jowitt (University of East Anglia). The project’s website and database will be launched on 17th September.

Proposals are invited by the organisers for papers that cover the three key themes over the period 1550-1750:

  • Seaborne Trade
  • Shipping
  • Maritime Communities

Whilst the focus is on Britain, the remit is broad and can cover topics such as piracy, navies, privateering, and women and the sea.

Individual paper proposals for in-person talks should consist of an abstract (200-250 words), a brief biography (up to 100 words) and full contact information. Papers should be 20 minutes in duration. We especially invite abstracts from early-career researchers and PhD students.

The deadline for proposals is 1 September 2025. Proposals and questions should be directed to Professor Craig Lambert at c.lambert@soton.ac.uk
