Event date: 24 to 26 November 2026
Organisers: Portuguese Maritime Society

19th International Symposium on Maritime History
The Society's theme for this year is: “The Sea as a Space of Encounters: Old and New Worlds”.
The symposium will take place in Lisbon, at the “Almirante Rogério de Oliveira” Auditorium, from 24 to 26 November 2026. Taking as its point of departure, while also expanding upon, Amerigo Vespucci’s metaphor of Mundus Novus, this year’s edition aims to foster discussion on the sea as a space of contact, circulation, encounter, and cultural, technological, economic, social, and politico-military transformation.
The organisers particularly welcome proposals addressing the following topics:
- The concept of the ocean and the art of navigation;
- Voyages within Europe and from Europe to the African, American, and Asian continents;
- Cultural and technological interactions;
- Economic, social, and politico-military impacts.
