Sustainable Seas – Bringing together Marine Conservation and Maritime Heritage

On Saturday June 20th, organisations will come together at East Quay alongside Exeter canal basin to hold a day of events that show how individuals can become involved and demonstrate solutions that will promote what we are terming: ‘Sustainable Seas.’ And not just the seas, but also the rivers and smaller waterways that flow into them. The organisers  are particularly keen for those groups that share these concern to join with them.

But this will not be a sombre occasion; they will have music, song, film and activity. And, just along from the event, will be Exeter Harbour’s monthly Farmer’s Market; another organisation promoting sustainability.

Also taking part will be representatives of traditional maritime crafts; skilled workers in willow, rope, flax, metal and principally wood. These are of course a sustainable alternative to the plastics and other man-made materials that pollute the waterways.

What is it? An event that brings together individuals and organisations concerned to ensure that our seas and waterways are free from pollution.

Who is it for? Water based conservation organisations; practitioners of traditional maritime crafts; those groups that just enjoy using the waterways and the general public.

How much will it cost us to attend? Not a penny!

Where will it take place and at what time? At East Quay, by Exeter Canal Basin between 11.00am and 5.00pm.

What will be happening? Activities and displays organised by participating groups including:

 Traditional maritime craft practicioners
 Historic Vessels open to visit
 Lectures, talks and films in the adjacent Haven Banks Centre.
 Music and song
 ‘Get Afloat’ opportunities
 Free coffee and pizza for participants.
 ‘Farmer’s Market’ in the Piazza

Who’s organising it? Exeter Heritage Harbour Group. They are a partnership of Exeter Canal & Quay Trust, The Friends of Exeter Ship Canal & Heritage Harbour and Exeter City Council.
